Interview with Dr. Siddhartha Ghosh
Are there any aspects of a photographer’s work that you think could be automated using artificial intelligence? What are your thoughts on this?
I believe Photography is a creative arena and should not be automated completely. However with the influx of Artificial Intelligence in our present day life, human creativity together with AI can create synergy and can revolutionize the entire gamut of photography sector. We Photographer Journalists need to be adaptive and should welcome change, as this transition is expected to be revolutionary for the journalism sector.
Are there any favorite places you seek out for finding new subjects and photographic inspiration?
Yes, places like Dubai, Zurich, Geneva and France are my all time favorites. Nonetheless, Kathmandu and Thimphu in Bhutan are close to my heart in terms of photography. Also the local places like Darjeeling – British Colonial development; also promises lot of scope to Photo Journalists like me.
Are there any particular projects you are currently working on or would like to undertake in the future?
Yes, I am presently engaged with couple of Indian Newspapers as Contributing Editor & Section Editor respectively where I am regularly contributing my Photo Journo reports. Of late, I have covered the Durga Festivals, Christmas, Diwali and Frankfurter Buchmesse – world’s largest, oldest and the best book fair, held in Frankfurt every year in the month of October. I also received commendations for reportings on International Film Festival of India IFFI – a Government of India initiative where I was an Press Information Bureau PIB – Government of India accredited Media Delegate.
Do you have a distinctive approach to creating photographs?
Yes, I prefer sudden clicks which are not pre-planned and are natural. This approach has garnered recognition to my work and has been appreciated by my stakeholders immensely.
Do you have a favorite place or situation where you enjoy photographing the most?
Yes, I enjoy photography at hill stations, the most. But as such, I am at my best when I get the freedom to perform at my own terms. This makes me innovative and creative and this makes me enjoy the work to the fullest.
Do you have any advice for beginner photographers who want to develop their skills?
“A good start is half the battle won.” Successful Photographers are the ones who start the activity out of inquisity and curiosity and get get addicted to it as a passionate photographer. A person ‘s natural instinct plays a big role in starting and carrying out the role of a photographer.
Do you have any rituals or preparations before a photo shoot?
I prefer places which are not crowded. However, proper planning and eye to detail alongwith locational logistics play a big part as part of my preparation. I also try to ensure that morning sessions are after proper night sleep and moderate breakfast.
Do you have any specific ethical principles that guide your work as a photographer?
Yes, the clicks should give a natural look. Nonetheless, on a superstitious note, I avoid 13th of every month wherever feasible. However, I think my best outputs are on 17th and 21st of every month. Also, as a Photography Journalist, I try to give respect to my work, which I think is very important in every profession.
